Part 1: Easter in Makarska – The Riviera Awakens in Perfect Tranquility
Magical Time
Easter is undoubtedly the most magical time to visit the Makarska Riviera. While large parts of Europe are still caught in the grey grip of late winter with rain lashing against the windows, something wonderful is happening here on the Croatian coast: the Adriatic coast awakens with a primal force of colors and scents. It is a time for absolute regeneration, the first truly warming rays of sunshine, and a deep-seated spirituality that comes alive in Croatian traditions.
But the most beautiful thing about Easter 2026? It is the calm before the storm.

The Privilege of Exclusivity: Makarska Without the Crowds
Anyone who knows Makarska in the height of summer knows the pulsating life, the music, and the bustling beaches. But those who come at Easter enjoy a completely different privilege. The first tourists are becoming noticeable—you see them sitting on the Riva with sunglasses and light spring attire—but everything remains wonderfully relaxed.
There are no mass crowds, no jostling in the alleys of the Old Town, and no struggle for the best table in a restaurant. During these days, the city belongs to the connoisseurs. You feel an almost meditative calm that invites you to simply sit on the pebble beach and listen to the waves. It is a time when the locals themselves are still relaxed, have time for a chat, and the hospitality is even more personal than in high season.

The Weather: Spring’s First Tender Kiss
Easter in Makarska is a promise of summer. The climate is now ideal for everyone who wants to get active without breaking a sweat.
- Temperatures: During the day, the thermometer often climbs to a golden 16°C to 20°C. In direct sunlight, it often feels much warmer—perfect T-shirt weather for the afternoon.
- The Sun: The solar power is already strong enough to gather the first tan of the year. Having your first coffee outdoors, right on the waterfront promenade, becomes a religious experience here.
- The Sea: At around 14°C to 15°C, the Adriatic is still for the very hardy, but the crystal-clear, almost mirror-smooth water provides the perfect backdrop for endless walks along the shore. The air is so pure and salty that every breath feels like a treatment for your lungs.

The Beach as Your Personal Living Room
Imagine walking to Punta Rata or Nugal, and the only thing you hear is the gentle lapping of the Adriatic against the pebbles. No battle for the best spot for your towel, no loud music.
- The Feeling: You can sit on the shore for hours, read a book, or simply gaze at the sparkling water towards the islands of Brač and Hvar.
- The Emptiness: You get the feeling that the coast belongs almost to you alone. It is a time for deep conversations and true regeneration.

Strolling Without the Elbow-Check
On the Riva (harbor promenade), you see the first vacationers enjoying their coffee with sunglasses and light jackets. But: in every café, you immediately find a front-row seat in the sun.
- No Mass Crowds: The restaurants are not yet fully occupied. The waiters have time for a quick chat; the atmosphere is familiar and warm.
- Authenticity: You experience the city as it truly is, before the souvenir stands and large excursion boats dominate the scene.

Croatian Easter Traditions: Where Tradition Touches the Heart
In Croatia, Easter (Uskrs) is much more than just a holiday—it is the most important family celebration of the year. The customs are centuries old and are maintained with pride:
- Palm Sunday (Cvjetnica): The festival begins with a beautiful gesture. Look out for people carrying artistically woven palm branches or silver-green olive branches to St. Mark’s Church on the main square for blessing. It is a scene full of peace and hope.
- The Blessing of Food: This is the culinary highlight of the tradition. On Holy Saturday or early Easter Sunday, locals bring their baskets decorated with white lace covers to the church. Inside are ham, hard-boiled eggs, spring onions, salt, and the famous sweet Easter bread Sirnica (also called Pinca). This breakfast is only eaten together in the family circle after the blessing.
- Pisanice (Easter Eggs): Eggs here are often still dyed traditionally—for example, in a brew of onion skins, which gives them a deep reddish-brown tone, decorated with the imprints of delicate spring herbs.

Excursions & Regeneration: Active in Harmony with Nature
Since the big stream of tourists is still yet to arrive, the hiking trails around Makarska are now your very own territory.
- Osejava Nature Park & Nugal: This is my absolute insider tip for the Easter season. The path begins right behind Hotel Osejava. The pines smell particularly intense in spring as the essential oils are activated by the first warm days. The path along the cliffs to Nugal Beach is now almost deserted. You can sit there for hours, look into the distance, and enjoy the complete absence of everyday stress.
- Coffee Culture & Gastronomy: The cafés on the Riva and the restaurants in the hidden alleys have already opened their terraces. Since everything is still kept quiet, you can snag the best seats without a reservation. Be sure to try a fresh Sirnica in the local bakeries (Pekara)—the scent of yeast, rose water, and lemon belongs to Easter in Croatia like salt belongs to the sea.
If you want to experience Makarska from its most authentic, quietest, and most blooming side, Easter is your time. It is a time for reflection, but also for pure joy of life. Those who are here now don't just see Makarska—they feel it.
Happy Easter in Makarska! – Sretan Uskrs!
